Government watchdog, Judicial Watch, has obtained five pages of documents from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), a component of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), revealing that CISA has been monitoring social media platforms and reporting on alleged “domestic violent extremism” (DVE). These documents were secured through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request submitted by Judicial Watch on December 28, 2022.
The FOIA request sought reports or communications from January 1, 2020, to the present regarding credible or specific plans to attack electricity infrastructure, communications shared with the private sector and state or local partners about such threats, interactions with the Electricity Sub-Sector Coordinating Council, and any confirmed attacks on electricity infrastructure by individuals or groups labeled as “domestic extremists” or “domestic terrorists.”
One of the documents, dated December 31, 2020, reveals that CISA Central sent an email to the National Risk Management Center (NRMC) and other recipients, requesting information related to threats to the electricity industry in connection with 5G conspiracy theories and potential threats in the lead-up to the January 6 Electoral College count in Washington, D.C. The email emphasized the urgency of this request, highlighting the significance of the intelligence sought.
